ND Legislature Establishes Term Limits for ND Real Estate Commission

NDAR successfuly advocated for term limits for the ND Real Estate Commission during the 2017 Legislative Session.  The legislation limiting appointments to two consecutive five-year terms passed the ND House 68-21 and the ND Senate 42-3. The change in the law becomes effective August 1, 2017.

NDAR would like to thank the following member legislators that sponsored the bill: Reps. Tom Beadle, Josh Boschee, Tom Kading and Steve Vetter and Sens. Scott Meyer and Jim Roers.  NDAR also appreciated the willingness of members Cindy Harvey, Dave Lanpher and Tricia Schlosser to testify, written testimony provided by Bernie Erickson and a letter of support from the ND Appraisers Association.  Success also would not have been possible without the phone calls and emails from all members to their legislators in response to two state Calls for Action (one House and one Senate) for a Do Pass.  Members should never doubt that working together we have clout!

Scam Alert: Fake Association Billing Fla. Members

Several members in Florida report receiving a fake dues notice from a group calling itself the “Florida Board of Realtors.” This is a scam, and no such board exists. The Florida Association and several local associations issued alerts warning members not to pay the bill and cancel any checks already sent. NAR is also investigating. Ask your members to report any suspicious mailings or requests for payment to NAR at

Opportunity to serve on ND Real Estate Commission

All interested members have the opportunity to serve on the ND Real Estate Commission.

Per ND Century Code 43-23-01.  The state real estate commission consists of five members, three of whom must be active real estate brokers appointed by the governor.  The commission shall organize by the election of a chairman.

Also per North Dakota Century Code 43-23-02. The governor shall appoint each member of the commission for a term of five years.  Terms must be staggered so the term of one member expires each year.  At the expiration of the term of any member of the commission, the governor shall appoint a successor for a term of five years.  A commissioner may not serve more than two consecutive five-year terms (effective 8/1/17).  In the event of a vacancy on the commission for any reason the governor shall appoint a member for the unexpired term of that member.

If you are interested in serving on the ND Real Estate Commission, which meets eight (8) times a year, go to this link on the Governor’s website:

Click on “Application Form for Boards and Commissions” in the left-hand column, fill out an application selecting the ND Real Estate Commission as the commission on which you want to serve, and submit.  Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis.  The web page has information about the current commissioners and their appointment and term ending dates. Terms begin each year on July 1, so appointments are made prior to that date.  For more information contact the ND Real Estate Commission or NDAR.
